Body Fat Calculator
Estimate your body fat percentage using the US Navy method. Requires measurements of neck, waist, and (for females) hip circumference.
What is Body Fat Percentage?
Body fat percentage is the proportion of fat tissue in your body compared to your total body weight. Unlike BMI, body fat percentage distinguishes between fat and muscle mass, providing a more accurate assessment of body composition.
US Navy Method
This calculator uses the US Navy body fat formula, which estimates body fat percentage based on measurements of neck, waist, and (for females) hip circumference. This method is widely used because it's simple, non-invasive, and reasonably accurate for most people.
How to Measure
- Neck: Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple), perpendicular to the neck
- Waist: Measure at the navel level, parallel to the floor
- Hip (females only): Measure at the widest point of the hips
Body Fat Categories
Body fat percentage categories vary by gender. Generally, essential fat is 2-5% for men and 10-13% for women. Athletes typically have 6-13% (men) or 14-20% (women), while average ranges are 14-24% (men) and 21-32% (women).

Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the US Navy method?
The US Navy method is reasonably accurate (within 3-4% of DEXA scans) when measurements are taken correctly. However, it's an estimation and may not be accurate for everyone, especially athletes or those with unusual body compositions.
When should I measure?
Measure in the morning before eating or drinking, and ensure the measuring tape is level and snug but not compressing the skin.
What's a healthy body fat percentage?
Healthy ranges vary by age and gender. Generally, 10-20% for men and 18-28% for women are considered healthy ranges. However, individual needs vary, and it's best to consult with a healthcare professional.
