How Loan Calculator Works
A loan calculator helps you understand the true cost of borrowing money. It calculates your payment amount using the principal amount, interest rate, loan term, and payment frequency. The calculator uses the standard amortization formula to determine how much you'll pay per period and how much goes toward principal versus interest.
Payment Frequencies
You can choose from different payment frequencies:
- Weekly: 52 payments per year - common for some personal loans
- Bi-weekly: 26 payments per year - can help pay off loans faster
- Monthly: 12 payments per year - most common for mortgages and auto loans
- Quarterly: 4 payments per year - less common, sometimes used for business loans
- Semi-annual: 2 payments per year - rare, sometimes for specific loan types
- Annual: 1 payment per year - very rare, typically for specialized loans
Understanding Your Results
Your payment amount stays the same throughout the loan term, but the proportion going to principal vs. interest changes over time. Early payments are mostly interest, while later payments are mostly principal. More frequent payments (like bi-weekly) can help you pay off the loan faster and save on interest, as you make more payments per year.
